With the 2012-13 NHL season cut short by the lock-out, Upper Deck and Panini decided to not release rookie cards for all players who debuted in 2012-13. That strategy resulted in the ‘Double Rookie Class’ for 2013-14. Similar to 2005-06, if you’re a rookie card collector, this is the season for you.

Panini’s 2012 Triple Play Baseball was one of the most enjoyable, affordable, fun-for-all-ages trading card releases of the year. With its entertaining mix of colourful illustrations, wearable eye blacks, temporary tattoos, and stickers, Triple Play was a hit.

In late March, 2013 Triple Play Baseball will provide a follow-up to last year’s release with new illustrations, new MLBPA superstars, more eye blacks, and more tattoos. And the price will remain affordable to all.

Each box of 2013 Triple Play Baseball (seven cards per pack, 24 packs per box) will contain two When I Was a Kid inserts, 15 Red-Bordered Stickers, six Blue-Bordered Stickers, three Cartoon Stickers, four Baseball 101 inserts, two Traditions, eight Panini All-Stars, eight Eye Blacks, and eight Tattoos.

Look for it this Spring 2013 at Canada Card World.

From Panini:

Now that the dust has started to settle from the coast-to-coast madness created by Panini America’s 2012 Black Friday promotion, it’s time to exhale, take a step back and attempt to assess the true impact of a program that, in two short years, has made local hobby shops across the country bona fide Black Friday shopping destinations for the first time in our industry’s history.

To be sure, Panini America’s Black Friday blossomed in a big way in its second year, earning higher visibility from all angles, greater participation from both hobby shop owners and collectors, and benefiting greatly from seemingly nonstop social media activation from beginning to end.

In addition to generating record revenue days for many hobby shops, the 2012 Black Friday promotion also led to new weekly and monthly view records for The Knight’s Lance, the official blog of Panini America, a spike in traffic due in large part to widespread interest in the blog’s many Black Friday posts in the days prior to the promotion kicking off.

But significantly more important than increases in overall community buzz or web traffic is the bottom-line financial impact Panini America’s sophomore edition of Black Friday had in America’s hobby shops — the most important measurable of all.

According to research conducted by The Industry Summit, Panini America’s Black Friday promotion was directly attributable to $1.9 million in incremental hobby sales, a 26 percent increase over 2011’s debut promotion. A key sales driver: Retailers’ aggressive planning and utilization of social media to promote Black Friday activities.

“The Black Friday packs definitely bring people in,’’ Eddie Barkley of Eddie’s Sports Treasures in Knoxville, Tenn., told Industry Summit organizers. “It has been a great promotion, and I appreciated it dearly.’’

Beginning next Friday, thousands of Canada’s collectors (and a few from south of the border) will descend upon the Toronto International Centre. Once again, Panini has created a promotional set that includes Rookie Cards numbered to 399, unique memorabilia cards featuring hats and materials worn and used at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase, one-of-a-kind sketch cards, instant-win redemption cards good for autographed memorabilia, and much, much more.

This year’s special set, distributed via those patented two-card, silver-foil packs, will include:

  • A 25-card NHL base set featuring the top names in the league, including 10 Rookie Cards numbered to just 399.
  • A 22-card Score Hot Rookies with a design taken directly from the original 1990 set and featuring players from all four of North America’s major sports. Each card in the Hot Rookies set will be numbered to 399.
  • An 18-card Rookie Materials insert featuring jerseys and hats worn by several rookies from basketball, football and hockey.
  • Tools of the Trade memorabilia cards of Chris Kreider embedded with towel swatches that Kreider used during the 2012 NHLPA Rookie Showcase.
  • Additional scarce insert cards randomly inserted and numbered to either five or only one.
  • Original 1/1 NHL Player Sketch Cards
  • Autographed pieces of memorabilia distributed via instant-win redemption cards.

Here’s the breakdown of how Panini America’s wrapper-redemption packs will be distributed:

  • Collectors opening one box of 2012-13 Certified Hockey at the Panini America booth will receive 6 wrapper-redemption packs
  • Collectors opening one box of 2012-13 Score Hockey at the Panini America booth will receive 1 wrapper-redemption pack.

Good luck and we’ll see you at the Expo!
