Hockey is back and Upper Deck has been working hard to formalize plans for the 2012-13 NHL trading card release schedule. Last week an announcement was made placing restrictions on the 2012-13 rookie classifications for new trading card sets.

Without having new rookie content to help drive some of Upper Deck’s 2012-13 NHL releases, the decision was made to cancel the following products:

  • 2012-13 NHL SPx
  • 2012-13 NHL Upper Deck Series Two
  • 2012-13 NHL Ultimate Collection

Because Upper Deck was so far along with these products, fans can expect to see some of the content live and distributed in other Upper Deck 2012-13 NHL trading card releases. For example, fans will be able to find some content from 2012-13 NHL SPx and 2012-13 NHL Upper Deck Series Two in packs of 2012-13 NHL SP Authentic which is to be released in June 2013.

Upper Deck is also excited to announce the popular Fleer Retro brand will be released in hockey this season, arriving in stores in April 2013. UD will be releasing more details about 2012-13 NHL Fleer Retro very soon, a set which pays tribute to Fleer’s long legacy of insert cards.

Panini will release three more products for the 2012-13 hockey trading card season.

2012-13 Limited Hockey will be available in stores in early February. Limited Hockey will be followed by 2012-13 Rookie Anthology Hockey which will be available in early June. The 2012-13 Panini Hockey product calendar will be rounded out with the highly anticipated return of Prime Hockey, which will be available in August 2013.

“We are excited for the NHL and NHL Players to return to the ice and look forward to delivering NHL/NHLPA trading cards to eager hockey fans around the world,” said Panini America CEO Mark Warsop. “We look forward to working with the league and its players to continue the momentum the hockey trading card category experienced last season. The time away from the game has only strengthened the demand and anticipation for new Panini America NHL/NHLPA trading card products.”

In a statement from the NHLPA’s Adam Larry, the 2012-13 hockey card season has changed drastically.

“Over the past few months, the NHLPA has been assessing the impact that a lockout shortened season would have on our trading card business, as well as how to specifically the rookie card class of 2012-13. After discussions both internally and externally, including with many stakeholders within the trading card industry, we have decided to restrict the rookie class for the 2012-13 product to those players who debuted between the 2012 All-Star Game and the conclusion of the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals.”

“This means that all rookies who debut during the 2012-13 season will have their rookie cards appear in 2013-14 products. The NHLPA encourages collectors to check Panini’s and Upper Deck’s official blogs for more details on their respective upcoming 2012-13 releases. We look forward to continuing our relationship with both Panini and Upper Deck to bring the best hockey players in the world to life through the dynamic and expanding trading card market.”

Basically, this means that there will be no new rookie cards in Upper Deck and Panini products in 2012-13. The rookies that are in products now such as Chris Kreider, Sven Baertschi, Jakob Silfverberg, and Jaden Schwartz will be the only rookies that appear in products this season.

Players who debut during the 2012-13 such as Nail Yakupov and Alex Galchenyuk will appear in 2013-14 products as rookies. As such, expect Panini and Upper Deck to reduce their product lines for the remaining portion of this collecting season.

Mr. McWilliam served until his death as Upper Deck’s Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Jason Masherah, the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Upper Deck, has been fulfilling the duties of President, and has now been formally named President of Upper Deck.
