Gretzky rookie cards stolen in $40,000 heist: Shop owner
By Vicki Gough, QMI Agency

CHATHAM, ONT. – A sports card shop owner says 90% of his hockey cards — including three Wayne Gretzky rookie cards — are gone after thieves broke into his store sometime over the weekend.

“My life’s collection of sports cards is gone,” Mike Lucio said Monday, noting a Jean Beliveau rookie card from 1954 also went missing. He estimates the items taken in the heist were worth about $40,000.

Lucio discovered his shop was broken into Sunday evening. He believes thieves used a bolt cutter to cut the padlock on the steel bars that provide extra security over the side door, then used a crowbar to pry it open.

Lucio opened Rockets Sports Cards in the southern Ontario town just 15 months ago. He started collecting sports cards 20 years ago.

Some of the cards have serial numbers.

He told his distributor about the theft and the distributor sent out a mass e-mail to other collector card shops to be on the lookout for Lucio’s property.

“There are only three collector card distributors in Ontario,” Lucio said.

He’s also calling the local pawnshops to alert them of the theft.

Chatham-Kent police are investigating the theft.
