The 2011 MLB World Series is in the books and the St. Louis Cardinals are once again the winners. The Cardinals have won eleven World Series championships, the most of any National League team, and second overall only to the New York Yankees, who won twenty-seven.

Topps has a great history of team cards for the champions. Although set collectors and player collectors rule the hobby, there is nothing like capturing the moment of celebration. The joy of being the best. Although these cards don’t fit into the category of a certain player, a set should capture the finest moments of the season and not just the rookies and stars.

Will Topps continue the tradition next year by including Chris Carpenter, Albert Pujols, and the gang in the midst of triumph?  We can only hope.

There are sets which help to define a hobby and the 1951-52 Parkhurst Hockey set is a set which has a history that is full of legend and legends.

With a collation process that involved a cement mixer, it included rookies of Gordie Howe and Terry Sawchuk and contained 105 cards. Printed on poor paper stock, the singles have a colour picture on the front, as well as the player’s name, team, position, statistics, birth data and card number. The backs are blank. Measuring 1-3/4″ by 2-1/2″, these cards, it is estimated that approximately 238,000 of each card were manufactured.

“They used a guillotine to cut the cards,” explained Burrell. “That’s why we have condition sensitive cards. What would happen is, they would put, let’s say, 20 sheets on the guillotine and they would slice. They would slice down and then they would slice the other way. It (the cement mixer) just mixed them up . . . There was somebody at the other end of the cement mixer. There was a girl who checked the cards for dings and if there were damaged cards, she would take them out.”

Great rookies and a cement mixer. Not a common combination. But a definite reason to add one to a collection.
