Sunday Fun-Day Fun Facts

30 January 2011

The Guardian Project.

Legendary 87-year-old comic book author Stan Lee who has co-created such superhero characters as Spider-Man, X-Men, Iron Man, and The Incredible Hulk is taking on the world’s coolest sport. The goal of the project is to attact a new generation of hockey fans by creating 30 new comic book-like characters. These superheroes will have their own special powers and represent every hockey team.

“I’ve always believed that every great plan starts with a great story,” Lee said. “I truly believe we have the perfect combination from which to launch 30 new superheroes and excite young fans around the globe.”

The Guardian Project page on Facebook has achieved almost 19,000 ‘Likes’ so far.

On January 18th, 2011, The Guardian Project super-hero voting passed one million overall votes.

A massive unveiling of The NHL Guardian Superheroes is a key attraction to the 2011 NHL All-Star Game this weekend at the Raleigh Convention Center and the NHL Fan Fair.

The Raleigh Convention Center floor holds a dark and stormy hallway with pictorial previews of comic book artist Stan Lee’s characters from the new Guardian Project.

The All-Star merchandise store is reporting that Guardian Project merchandise and kids-sized jerseys were flying off the shelves this weekend.

There has been no report yet on whether or not trading cards will be created by Upper Deck or Panini featuring all thirty Guardians.

A few years ago, collectors voted on some concepts and In The Game responded. Collectors were polled on their favourite year in hockey and the results were extremely close. 1972 won out over 1980 by the slimmest of margins. So ITG responded and made ‘1972 – The Year In Hockey’. To keep the masses happy, ITG has now turned their attention to the runner-up with the upcoming release of ‘Decades – The 1980s’.

In hockey, the 1980s started off with a bang. The under-dog U.S.A. Olympic Hockey team defeated the U.S.S.R. and then went on the defeat Finland to win the Olympic gold medal. The decade also produced two historic Canada Cup tournaments and an unbelievable crop of NHL rookies.

‘Decades – The 1980s’ will salute those incredible ten years. The product will feature hard-signed autographs, vintage game-used memorabilia, and cut signatures.

Players who have already been signed include:

  • Jim Craig
  • Danny Gare
  • Joe Mullen
  • Mike Vernon
  • Tom Lysiak
  • Bob Sauve
  • Andy Moog
  • Reed Larson
  • John Garrett
  • Charlie Simmer
  • Bobby Smith
  • Mike Eruzione
  • Pat Lafontaine
  • Dan Bouchard
  • Harold Snepsts
  • Eldon ‘Pokey’ Reddick
  • Thomas Steen
  • Mike Gartner

In The Game’s ‘Decades – The 1980s’ will be released later this spring and will be available for pre-order soon from Canada Card World.
