Sunday Fun-Day Fun Facts
This week, NHL Central Scouting released its list of the top CHL, USHL, and International prospects available for the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.
For years, we’ve all been hearing about Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Adam Larsson, and Sean Couturier.
Besides the top young guns chosen each year, those who have been drooled over since they were fourteen or fifteen, the players which catch scouts and fans eyes are often those who grew up around the game. In recent drafts, we’ve seen selections such as Jarred Tinordi (Mark), Brandon Sutter (Brent), and Nick Foligno (Mike) to name a few. All sons of former NHLers.
The upcoming 2011 NHL Entry Draft will be no different. Two last names jump right off the page.
David Musil, D, Vancouver Giants, 4th ranked WHL Skater
David is the son of former Minnesota North Stars and Calgary Flames stalwart defenseman Frantisek Musil. Frantisek played nearly 800 NHL games. Although never known for his skill, his toughness was legendery. Not only does David have his father’s toughness in his bloodlines, let’s not forget that his uncle is Stanley Cup winner and tough as nails competitor Bobby Holik.
No one wanted to find Frank Musil in their hockey card packs. This may change with David Musil who has shown some offensive flair in his short career with the Vancouver Giants. If he was drafted by his local Vancouver Canucks, he may become a local legend.
Alexander Ruuttu, C, Jokerit Jr., 12th ranked Finnish skater
Alexander Ruuttu was born in Chicago. Not a typical name for someone from the Windy City. That happened because his father, Christian Ruuttu was playing for the local Chicago Blackhawks at the time.
Although often being remembered mainly as a solid contributor to the Buffalo Sabres in the late-80′s and early-90′s, Christian Ruuttu spent a few years in Chicago and Vancouver before returning to Europe to finish his career.
‘Like father, like son’ best describes the skill level of Alexander and Christian. Both play with an edge to their game and both contribute at almost a point per game pace.
