Who to Collect – P.K. Subban

27 September 2010

Pernell Karl. Not exactly the name of a potential superstar. But “P.K.”. That’s more like it!

P.K. Subban made his name at the end of the 2009-10 season for the Montreal Canadiens. He quickly became a fan favourite with his dazzling moves and winning personality. A perfect fit for hockey-mad Montreal.

Originally, Subban was drafted in the second round, 43rd overall of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. The defenseman is a two-time gold medal winner with Team Canada at the World Junior Championships. Subban was elected to play in the 2010 AHL All-Star Game and was also awarded the AHL President’s Award in recognition of his accomplishments in the 2009-2010 season.

Subban began his junior hockey career with Belleville Bulls of the OHL in 2005–06. In 2007-08, he helped Belleville to the J. Ross Robertson Cup Finals against the Kitchener Rangers, where they lost the OHL title in seven games.

In February 2010, although it was only for two games, Subban made everyone take notice by registering his first NHL point, an assist, in his debut against the Philadelphia Flyers on February 12. On April 26, 2010, Subban was recalled again and recorded his first NHL playoff assist, in his first NHL playoff game against the powerful Washington Capitals before scoring his first goal against the also powerful Pittsburgh Penguins a few days later. Subban was a vital contributor to Montreal’s upset of both the Capitals and Penguins during their 2009-10 playoff run.

In game 3 against the Philadelphia Flyers in the 2010 Eastern Conference Finals, P.K. became only the third rookie defenseman in Canadiens’ history to record three assists in one game.

Subban has already become a folk hero in Montreal. His collectability has been off-the-charts since his debut as collectors scramble to acquire his cardboard. Normally defensemen don’t garner this type of attention but remember, this guy is a Montreal Canadien and this guy oozes talent and charisma.

P.K. Subban will be featured in most, if not all, new releases for the 2010-11 NHL season which are all available at Canada Card World.

Sunday Fun-Day Fun Facts

26 September 2010

From an article by Julie Blum for the Columbus Telegram

COLUMBUS — These collectible cards don’t feature baseball sluggers or football stars.

But hopes are the cards will be as popular among kids and youths will want to collect, swap and show them off.

The St. John Vianney Priesthood Cards have been in print since July. The cards feature priests from the Omaha archdiocese. Similar to baseball cards, the priesthood cards have a photo of the priest on one side and random “Sacramental Stats” such as hobbies, favorite prayer and childhood parish, printed on the other.

The cards are the brainchild of four Omaha moms — Diane Anderson, Melia Vankat, Lori Mellender and Cathy Hula. The group thought it would be a good way to get kids interested in religious vocations by learning about the men who are priests.

Anderson said it is putting a person behind the face of a priest.

“We want kids to be thinking at a young age that the priesthood is something they can consider. Kids only see priests at an altar or in a confessional. These men have a personal life. They have hobbies and like to go to football games,” Anderson said.

Learning about priests on a more personal level helps children see priests as real people, Anderson said.

Rev. Tom Weisbecker, pastor at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, said he was a bit skeptical about the idea at first because he wasn’t sure there would be interest. But he was wrong.

“The kids are just going nuts. They are buying cards, trading them,” Weisbecker said, adding that he often gets asked to autograph his card.

Rev. Mike Keating, associate pastor at St. Bonaventure, said he doesn’t even have any of his own cards left because he has given them away to kids who wanted them.

Not only are the cards a way to introduce kids to the priesthood and religious life, but they also are a fundraising effort for the Omaha Archdiocese Seminarian Fund. Every dollar raised by selling the packs of cards goes to the fund. A recent donation of $5,000 was given to the Seminarian Fund last month. Anderson said if all the cards are sold they will have raised $30,000.

The opportunity to be part of the priesthood cards was open to all priests in the archdiocese. About half, 121, responded.

Anderson said the response has been so good they are considering reprinting more cards with additional priests in a couple of years. Cards are sold locally at Tooley’s for $1 per pack. Packs include eight randomly selected cards, but collector sets are available for $100.
