The Washington Nationals rookie sensation is done for this season and probably 2011 after the team announced Friday that he has a torn ligament in his right elbow. In layman’s terms – Tommy John surgery is likely.
What does this mean for the baseball card market which has been on fire since the release of 2010 Bowman Baseball. The rookie crop is excellent this year but this season was all about Strasburg. But don’t count the youngster out. After all, he’s only 22 and many pitchers come back better after the surgery. Imagine if that happened!
Players including Josh Johnson, A.J. Burnett, Francisco Liriano, Tim Hudson, Chris Carpenter, John Smoltz, and Billy Wagner have returned from Tommy John surgery and excelled. Would you like to head into the pennant race with that pitching staff? I think so.
Our friends are The Beckett Blog broke it down for collectors in terms of his impact on the hobby this season
Strasburg’s Bowman Chrome SuperFractor sold for a SuperFractor record-breaking $16,403 in May before being re-sold again for $21,403 in July.
Since January 1st, Beckett Media has tracked 15,185 sales of his baseball cards (technically, the number would be higher as some auctions included more than one card)
Stephen Strasburg appears on just 151 cards total at this point in time.
There were 113,278 bids on those cards.
The cash total – $1,010,703.99.
Average price per sale of Strasburg’s cards – $66.56
In comparison, Atlanta Braves outfielder, Jason Heyward appears on more than twice as many cards than Strasburg with 381. There were 66,785 bids on Heyward’s cards for a total of $619,633.59.
Dr. Brian Price of In The Game Trading Cards has joined the blogosphere and is now blogging about his experiences in the business as well as announcing news items. The blog can be found at prezsez.wordpress.com.
The most recent news which Dr. Price blogged about is:
“Everyone wanted me to wait and make this announcement in our next Newsletter but that’s what a BLOG is for, to create up to the minute information. Now for the news, In The Game is pleased to announce the signing of Steve Yzerman to the In The Game team.
I have always enjoyed our relationship with Steve and it’s great to have him in our products again this year. The first product Steve will appear in will be UM-10 including autographs and memorabilia.
Tretiak in goal, Lemieux, Yzerman, Messier up front, In The Game is going to be putting a great team forward for the 2010-11 season.”

Collectors at Canada Card World and beyond have all been waiting to hear more about ITGs Enshrined, so now we have the scoop!
“Just wanted to give my Blog followers a little insight about In The Game – Enshrined. This product celebrates the men and soon to be women who have been honored by induction in the Hockey Hall of Fame. The product will feature one autograph card or limited memorabilia card or cut signature card and three premium base cards.
The autograph cards will be hard signed, the memorabilia cards will be extremely limited and the cut signatures will be the best we have ever produced.
In my humble opinion (I can do that on my own Blog) no other card company could produce this product. It has taken years to accumulate the authentic game-used memorabilia and establish the relationships with the Hall of Famers.
I am excited about this product and I hope you will be as well.
A Release Date has not been determined as we have to collect the hard signed autographs. A price point has also not been determined as we factor our costs. Both pieces of information should be available soon. The product will be very limited. If you collect Rookies, forget this one but if you collect Hall of Famers, this one’s for you.”
The Topps Million Card Giveaway has been a tremendous success for the company. With the promotion, baseball collectors could open 2010 Topps baseball products and find redemption codes for all of the original Series 1 and Series 2 cards produced between 1952 and 2009. The cards aren’t reprints. They’re all real. Each and every card available is a one-of-a-kind original. This week, to make football collectors happy, Topps launched the new Gridiron Giveaway website.
Collectors can look for special gridiron giveaway code cards, inserted one in every six packs of 2010 Topps Football. Upon registering for free at the website, collectors can redeem their codes. Prizes include vintage buyback cards and autographed memorabilia. Cards included in the buyback program range from the years 1956-2009. Memorabilia items include an assortment of Autographed Mini-Helmets, HOF autographed Footballs, football helmets signed by NFL rookies, and Topps autograph football cards.
Similar to the Million Card Giveaway, collectors are free to make trades with other members, keep the cards in their portfolio, or actually receive the cards through the mail, starting in late September 2010.
